Ministry of Natural Resources Implements Thesaurus Solution from Soutron Global

Soutron Thesaurus RDF Export Enables Easy Metadata Publishing

San Diego, CA - August 14, 2012

International library transformation company Soutron Global announces the implementation of their Thesaurus solution at the Canadian Ministry of Natural Resources (NRCan). NRCan develops policies and programs that enhance the contribution of natural resources to the economy.

The Soutron Thesaurus was designed to support librarians, knowledge and information managers responsible for managing terminology, indexes and the relationships between terms. The system addresses the challenge of inconsistent content or data converted from multiple sources, and can help to regulate vocabulary and minimize the occurrence of outmoded or discredited terms in corporate communications.

As a leader in science and technology in energy, forests, and minerals and metals subject matters, NRCan used their expertise in earth sciences to build and maintain an up-to-date metadata system, GeoNetwork Opensource, which is used to catalog ministry data along with information products which are then made available to the public. NRCan’s challenge in implementing their metadata solution was that they required an importable thesaurus in RDF format, which Soutron was able to quickly provide.

"The Soutron team worked very closely with us to develop a solution to meet our needs. They were successful in delivering the solution and did so to meet a very tight deadline," states Shari MacDonald of NRCan. "It was a pleasure working with the Soutron team. They were knowledgeable, receptive to our ideas and very professional."

RDF is the standard for encoding metadata and other knowledge on the Semantic Web. It allows structured and semi-structured data to be mixed, exposed, and shared, in turn enabling users to deal with information with greater efficiency with regards to decision-making. RDF's ability to model disparate, abstract concepts has also led to its increasing use in knowledge management applications, to provide knowledge-based information products as a basis for action.
